The idea “TV as box” emerged in an area of considerations regarding the location of the image. Is it the painting, the monitor, the film screen, the filmstrip, or the magnetic tape where the image is located? This question led me to search for further box metaphors, from the black box of the cinema to the white cube of art. The photo camera is already a kind of image preserve or image container. So I chose a container for canned fish that I rolled up layer by layer, corresponding to the rolling and unrolling of film in photo and film cameras, or winding and unwinding on film projectors – a metaphorical action. This act of unwinding plays upon the German word for exposing a story (“aufrollen”) as it applies to investigative journalism and enlightened justice. Namely dark stains, old cases, hidden and repressed crimes are exposed or “unrolled.” The world is a container full of images, some of which are shown while others remain hidden. (Peter Weibel)
